With the growing list of woes associated with obesity, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, the weight problem in America has become a serious concern. Yet we continue to look to fad diets as the answer to this serious problem - as if living on bacon and eggs, cabbage soup, or low-calorie meal replacement drinks could ever be construed as a healthy solution.

A review of popular diet programs conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, stated that most weight loss programs offered little or no proof that participants were successful in loosing weight or keeping weight off in the long run. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has stated that of the millions of people that diet, less than 5% of those who actually loose weight will be able to keep it off in the years to come. It has been surmised that a dieter may shed approximately 100 pounds in the course of a lifetime, but gain back 120 lbs. One benefit of weight loss organizations, however, was group support. Dieters who joined support groups appeared to loose more weight than those who decided to go it alone.

Fad diets themselves bring with them a plethora of health concerns. Restrictive low calorie diets can be self-defeating. The body's metabolism slows moving the system into energy conservation mode and holding on to every calorie for future use instead of burning it. Precious muscle mass is broken down, and low lethargy occurs. Low carbohydrate diets can result in dehydration and constipation. The risk of heart disease is escalated due to the increase of bad cholesterol found in animal fats. When nutritional integrity of the body is threatened due to the elimination of a particular food group, the dieter is at risk for many health problems including osteoporosis, certain types of cancers, immune system issues, electrolyte imbalances, and eating disorders. And with diets, as opposed to permanent lifestyle changes, the probability of gaining back what you have lost, and then some, is high.

In a culture obsessed with physical perfection perhaps we must evaluate how we think about weight in general. Are we dieting to be healthy, or just thin? If the later is the objective, then further investigation into dieting motivation may be necessary, but if health is the ultimate goal, then looking at lifestyle changes may the place to start. Are you an emotional eater, have a compulsive sweet tooth, or someone who eats out of boredom? Do you eat fresh foods or only things that come in a box, bag, or through a drive-up window? What is the overall condition of your health? Is your lifestyle sedentary or active? What type of physical activities do you enjoy? Questions like these help you build the foundation for creating a customized Non-Diet Diet - a common sense plan for living that will result weight loss, elevated energy levels, and improved health and well-being.

Quick fixes usually result in long term failures, and while the answer to America's weight problem may not come in the form of a magic diet, it need not be extremely complicated either. Maintaining a sensible meal plan, including complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, good fats, fruit and vegetables, and sweets in moderation, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy attitude regarding the weight/health connection may be the simple answer you've been looking for.

Health Diet - Dieting to Help Eliminate, Improve or Prevent Acne


Everybody [especially teenagers] hates this skin problem. some get really bad acne which can result in scarring while others just get a mild case. Either way we do need to look at our diet and change our thought process when it comes to eradicating these awful blemishes and pimples.

Though there is some debate as to whether changing to a acne free diet actually works, there is enough support out there for it to be realistic as there is enough evidence proving that what we eat may affect our skin [we are what we eat!].

Changes needed in our diet

Diet alone will not clear up any acne problems [but it helps], you will also need to get into the habit of cleaning and moisturizing you skin at least twice a day.

Avoid or limit the following:

peanut products
fried foods
dairy
salt
refined sugars
high carb foods
highly processed foods

Not all of the above mentioned foods will increase you acne, some people are more sensitive than others and therefore will have a breakout. Try eliminating one at a time and see if it helps clear your skin, I am sure you have noticed that after a party, where you were eating handfuls of nuts, you had a break out - try limiting your peanut intake for a few weeks and see if there is a difference [peanuts used as an example, it could also be those greasy savory meatballs or cheesy pizza pieces etc.]

Increase your intake of the following

* whole grains - oatmeal, brown rice, wheat pastas, etc

* fresh vegetables - all vegetables are good for you, remember though not to add any fats or sugars to enhance them [sad but you do need to avoid these]

* fruit - all will be good for you but there are a few that have a very high sugar content, limit these wherever possible

* lean proteins - there is nothing more tasty than that piece of fat on the edge of a perfectly cooked steak, avoid this tasty morsel totally if you have a skin problem. Chicken skin is also a no no, this contains large amounts of fats and can also increase the oiliness that you are trying to clear up.

Some possible causes of acne [excluding foods]

* hormones - the hormonal increase that happens when we blossom from pre-teenage years into puberty

* birth control pills - starting or stopping the pill can have a hormonal reaction that could cause acne

* hormonal changes - in pregnancy, the poor body goes through some major changes in this period, and while some women bloom and look beautiful there are a few out there that have the opposite reaction to this very normal occurrence

* some medication - while trying to control or cure some other problem a reaction could occur giving you a bad case of those awful pimples

* greasy make-up - this can block the pores in your skin, remember to get non greasy make up when next purchasing these items

* hereditary - generally if one of your parents had a bad skin problem, you will have a bigger chance of getting a pimple problem as well

Nutrients that should be included in vegetarian diet

A vegetarian diet should include an array of nutrients for optimum result. It should include proper amount of proteins, minerals and calcium

Protein: For vegetarian diet adequate amount of protein can be derived from plant sources. Plant protein can alone provide the necessary amount of amino acid that is needed by your body. Vegetables, whole grains, seeds, legumes and nuts contain nonessential and essential amino acid. Soy protein is also a good source of protein that can be considered as an equivalent to the animal source and can alone supplement the protein requirement of the body.

Iron: Red meat, egg yolk, liver are the richest source of iron and cholesterol. So vegetarians can be low in iron intake. To supplement this deficiency you need to consume lots of beans and spinach. Dried fruits and brewer's yeast can also be taken as they are good source of protein derived from plants.

Zinc : Zinc is required for growth and development of your body. Plant sources of zinc are nut, legumes and grains. Supplements should not be taken more than 15 to 18 mg. if supplements are taken more than 50 mg then it can lower the HDL cholesterol in man.

Vitamin B-12: vitamin B-12 is mainly found in animal source. In vegetarian diet it is found in fortified breakfast cereals, in some brands of brewer's yeast, fortified beverages of soy, and from vitamin supplements.

Vitamin D: vegetarians are generally devoid of vitamin D as there are no convenient sources. However exposure to sunlight, milk fortified with vitamin d, some fortified soy milk provide little amount of it.

Calcium: Vegetarians can absorb more calcium than non vegetarians. Some convenient sources are spinach, broccoli, legume, soyabean products and kale

Vegetarians consume fewer calories than non vegetarians. So they are needed to consume different kinds of foods and adequate calories to fulfill the energy demand. They should lay stress on consumption of unrefined grains and fortified cereals. Vitamin A and vitamin C rich foods are also of great importance. Consumption of dairy products should be limited to fat free or low fat products and consumption of cholesterol should also be limited within 300 mg per day.
